Hardwood details

Hardwood floors, made for every room in a home, come in many types and styles. Floors can be unfinished or finished. Unfinished floors, which are sanded and finished on-site, are ideal if you want to:

  • Put hardwood in the kitchen (the finish will seal the seams between boards)
  • Apply a custom stain before the final finish
  • Match the color of your current flooring

Prefinished hardwood flooring is sanded and sealed at the factory.

  • There are no odors and VOCs during installation.
  • The floor can be walked on immediately.
  • Installation takes little time.

Woods, finishes, and more

Solid wood flooring can be sanded and refinished many times while engineered hardwood flooring can only be sanded and refinished a couple of times during its lifetime. The latter type of flooring has a veneer of real wood on top that is glued to several layers of wood such as plywood. It can be used in basements since it is designed in perpendicular layers, meaning there is less expansion and contraction.

If you opt for solid hardwood flooring, consider very hardwoods like oak, maple, and cherry. Walnut, ash, and mahogany are more good choices. Exotic woods like teak, jarrah, and mesquite are available too. Surface finishes enhance the wood grain and help protect the floor from everyday wear and tear. Water-based finishes dry more quickly than oil-based finishes, which are amber in color. Sheen ranges from distressed and matte to glossy. Keep in mind that more sheen means more noticeable scratches and scuffs.

Olden Carpet and Flooring can install your wood floor, whether you opt for a glued-down floor or a floating floor that doesn’t require the use of glue. Wood installations are one of our specialties. Our installers are seasoned pros that have been pleasing customers in Langhorne, Doylestown, Newton, Levittown, and Bensalem for many years. Family owned and operated Olden Carpet and Flooring provides top quality flooring products and services.
