Solid wood flooring can be sanded and refinished many times while engineered hardwood flooring can only be sanded and refinished a couple of times during its lifetime. The latter type of flooring has a veneer of real wood on top that is glued to several layers of wood such as plywood. It can be used in basements since it is designed in perpendicular layers, meaning there is less expansion and contraction.
If you opt for solid hardwood flooring, consider very hardwoods like oak, maple, and cherry. Walnut, ash, and mahogany are more good choices. Exotic woods like teak, jarrah, and mesquite are available too. Surface finishes enhance the wood grain and help protect the floor from everyday wear and tear. Water-based finishes dry more quickly than oil-based finishes, which are amber in color. Sheen ranges from distressed and matte to glossy. Keep in mind that more sheen means more noticeable scratches and scuffs.
